Opposed to DA II scaling

Dear VA Board of Dentistry,

I am opposed to DA II scaling

We must address the real issues and concerns regarding the underserved populations of Virginia.  A few dentists have stated that the Assistant II scaling should be passed, their conditions being a properly trained person under the direct supervision of the dentist.  I don't consider those already coming into the dental office, underserved populations.  As far as properly trained, dental hygienists are well educated and thoroughly trained in their profession.  It is not practical to believe a dentist is going to evaluate each of these patients to determine their periodontal health prior to these cleanings.  How will the extra chair time of these dentists play into the finances of the practice.

Assistants do not obtain licenses therefore, they are not directly accountable for their patient care.  I strongly urge you not to pass this Assistant II scaling.  It is only ethical to place our patients standard of care first, it must not be compromised.  The only costs being eliminated are the hygienists salaries, this does not directly affect these patients.  I haven't heard any mention of decreased cost of prophylaxis to be added to this amendment.

Most agree an enourmous problem of dental patients is their fears and anxiety of dental care.  How would allowing an unqualified person to perform such an important skill be better for these patients?

     Respectfully,

 Stephanie Stanley, BS, RDH
