I am perplexed after reading comments by those who support dental assistants scaling teeth. If a dentist is truly concerned about his patients's dental health, why would they support an untrained assistant to oversee his patient's oral health. As hygienists we have extensive training in patient care and health. Would the dentists who support this feel comfortable letting his assistant prep a carious lesion? I have been a hygienist for 36 years and practiced full time for all of those years. It saddens me to see our profession being demeaned. We maintain 15 hours of continuing education a year and have a passion for our profession. Please reconsider this proposal and strongly support dental hygienists and the invaluable treatment we provide patients.
