Please don't consider this silly measure to allow dental assistant's to scale teeth. The vast majority of dental assistants have no training or education beyond a high school diploma. Who would do the training? When? I have a four-year degree in dental hygiene, two of which were spent learning to scale teeth and care for patients. Dentists have very little training in scaling. It would be a shame to see untrained persons running a prophy mill while the dentist reaps the profits. The argument that dental assistants already scale cement is invalid. This is minor supragingival scaling where I've seen tons of cement left, some of which caused problems for the patient; and tissue trauma. There is a reason for the dental hygiene profession. We take care of the whole patient, from evaluating the medical history, head and neck exam, oral hygiene instructions... who will do this? The dentist doesn't have time. It will not get done. Too bad for the patient.
Please don't pass this measure. Thank you.
