| Purpose of the meeting PURPOSE OF THE MEETING: The Virginia Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ) will host the second Community Engagement meeting for the Hat and Black Creek TMDL on May 17, 2023. The TAG meeting is open to the public and any member of the public may participate in the proceedings. Meeting participants will assist in development of a cleanup study, also known as Total Maximum Daily Loads (TMDLs), to address benthic impairments of Hat and Black Creeks in Nelson County, which have been listed on Virginia’s § 303(d) list of impaired waters for failing to meet Virginia’s water quality standards due to an altered benthic community. TMDLs will be developed for sediment in both creeks, and total phosphorus in Black Creek, which were identified as probable contributors to the poor health of the stream segment. The meeting will discuss a series of preliminary sediment and phosphorus load allocation scenarios for the two creeks.
