I am a practicing Exotics Veterinarian in Virginia and feel that non-licensed veterinary assistants under the direct supervision of a Veterinarian are fully capable of placing IV catheters with the proper training. It is my understanding that there are simply not enough LVT's in the state to support the staff levels that would be needed to limit this skill to licensed staff only.
