Oppose

I oppose this petition for assistants to place IV catheters because there are several risks involved for instance the lack of knowledge they possess (what did I go to school for), infection at the catheter site (aseptic techniques), etc.  If we allow the assistants to start placing IV catheters this will lead to anesthetic induction, intubation, etc.  There are high risks involved in what we do everyday no matter how small the task is.  I believe veterinary medical professionals, like LVT's who were trained to do their jobs, are the best people for the job.  Would you want a medical assistant placing an IV catheter in you?  I certainly would not.  I would prefer the trained nurse to place my catheter.  Assistants are there to assist and do just that.
