Training should be done in an academic environment with the proper supervision and training. You cannot ensure the proper training will be provided in a clinic and that patients won't be subjected to multiple painful attempts. We understand there is a shortage of lvt's but this will continue if we allow more assistants to take away our professional job duties. Perhaps we should be looking at other reasons like job sustainability, satisfaction, benefits to add to lvt professional growth and not hinder an already strained profession. Are medical assistants in human facilities allowed to place IVCs? No, so why then is veterinary medicine not wanting to keep the same standards of care? Isn't that what we strive for?
