The Supreme Court has determined [finally] that the Second Amendment means exactly what it says.  Please permit the carry of handguns in state forests.  During the legal seasons, I enjoy hunting small game, such as squirrels, with a handgun [it's much more challenging].  Also, as a holder of a carry concealed permit, I frequently have a handgun on me.  You may wish to note that CCP holders are certified law-abiding citizens.  By all means, proceed in accordance with the Petition.
