I find it disheartening and somewhat insulting that it has come to the point where "proferssional engineers" need to have mandatory continuing education . Seems like it might be time to unionize. I would think it would be more appropriate to have the licenses revoked from those who commit errors due to the lack of maintaining the required knowledge to practice in their area of expertise, and for those individuals to have strict requirements, including education, to be re-instated.
It also seems like there are loop holes for those who would elect to demonstrate compliance without really learning anything applicable to their practice, essentially placing a burden on those individuals who are truly professional and not changing much with regard to those who would opt to find loop holes.
While I routinely satisfy the proposed requirements, I could see where 16 credit hours per two year period may be excessive for some engineers.
Finally, has there been a problem with engineering practice in the state of Virginia? I was not aware of any significant broad reaching problems that demand mandatoryu continuing education. This almost appears like an effort by "professional" societies to maintain or increase participation and revenues up via accredited training programs via mandatory regulations rather than program content.
