Purpose of the meeting
This is the first meeting of the Technical Advisory Committee (TAC) for the Mattaponi River Watershed Plan. The Virginia Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ), with assistance from Streams Tech, Inc., and the Virginia Institute of Marine Science, will be undertaking a watershed plan project for the Mattaponi River watershed. Portions of the following streams for this watershed have been identified as impaired on the Clean Water Act ยง303(d) List for not supporting the recreation use due to bacteria levels that exceed the state water quality standards: Brock Run (Spotsylvania County); Mattaponi River (Caroline County); Chapel Creek (King and Queen County); Motto River (Caroline County); Doctors Creek (Caroline County); Po River (Spotsylvania and Caroline Counties); Glady Run (Spotsylvania County); Polecat Creek (Caroline County); Maracossic Creek (Caroline and King & Queen Counties); Poni River (Caroline County); Mat River (Spotsylvania County); Reedy Creek (Caroline County); Matta River (Spotsylvania and Caroline Counties); and Root Swamp (King and Queen County). The purpose of this project is to investigate the sources of the recreation impairments and develop a total maximum daily load (TMDL) and implementation plan for bacteria impairments in each stream. A TMDL is the total amount of a pollutant a water body can receive and still meet water quality standards. To restore water quality, pollutant levels have to be reduced to the TMDL allocated amount. In case of inclement weather, the alternate meeting date is: Tuesday, March 10, 2015, from 2:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. in the Rappahannock Reception Room at the Bowling Green Event Hall, located at 117 Butler Street, Bowling Green, VA 22427. Please note that the alternate meeting date will be used if the offices of Caroline County are closed due to inclement weather on March 4, 2015. Caroline County's website is www.visitcaroline.com. If you have any questions regarding the TAC or this meeting, please contact the DEQ staff listed. All materials related to this project will be posted on the DEQ website at: http://www.deq.virginia.gov/Programs/Water/WaterQualityInformationTMDLs/TMDL/TMDLDevelopment/DocumentationforSelectTMDLs.aspx
