I fully support the act of dry needling by trained and licensed physical therapists. Physical therapists undergo 7 years of schooling to obtain a doctorate degree, including but not limited to extensive anatomy coursework. In order to become certified in the practice of dry needling, PTs must complete additional, extensive post graduate course work. In addition, a thorough written theoretical exam as well as a practical examination are required to become certified. PTs do not claim to do acupuncture and the argument that we are performing said treatment is preposterous and ill informed. To ban PTs from performing a treatment technique that we are fully qualified and protected by under our practice act would be a huge disservice to patients.
