I was born and raised in Roanoke Virginia, attending the public school system. When I came out as trans to close friends and family in middle school, people were afraid of how everyone else would react. When I came out publicly in high school, some of those fears were realized. Myself and other trans students were often harassed for simply existing, though many students and teachers were positive and supportive presences. I'm lucky that many people in my high school attempted to create a physically safe, at least, environment for trans students but even that isn't guaranteed everywhere.
Please push for protections for us. By being more formally protected by the State's education department, trans students can be better protected from discrimination to focus on being kids and doing their schoolwork, extracurriculars, and living their childhoods to the fullest like everyone should. No child should face discrimination and prejudice and you have the wonderful opportunity to protect future kids! Thank you.
