Guidance Document Change: The Model Policies for the Treatment of Transgender Students in Virginia’s Public Schools guidance document was developed in response to House Bill 145 and Senate Bill 161, enacted by the 2020 Virginia General Assembly, which directed the Virginia Department of Education to develop and make available to each school board model policies concerning the treatment of transgender students in public elementary and secondary schools. These guidelines address common issues regarding transgender students in accordance with evidence-based best practices and include information, guidance, procedures, and standards relating to: compliance with applicable nondiscrimination laws; maintenance of a safe and supportive learning environment free from discrimination and harassment for all students; prevention of and response to bullying and harassment; maintenance of student records; identification of students; protection of student privacy and the confidentiality of sensitive information; enforcement of sex-based dress codes; and student participation in sex-specific school activities, events, and use of school facilities.

Oppose proposed transgender policy
 

There are many problems with these policies.  They are too extreme.  I oppose their use with especially young children, who are too young to understand what it means to be a different gender.  This is child abuse.  I recall reading about a young girl who wanted to be a boy.  Why?  She revealed she hoped to please her parents who had wanted a boy.  Great Britain, ahead of us in this movement, seems to be having regrets. 

There should be punishment for students who pretend to be a transgender to gain an advantage in sports, academics, to challenge a teacher, to see girls undress.  Teachers should not be permitted to promote transgenderism.  Teachers are influential adults in children's lives.  They should not encourage or affirm transgenderism.  How many children who change their gender change it back when adults?  Is it about 80%?  You are opening a Pandora's Box.  

I studied education at Radford with honors many years ago.  I would never consider teaching today with such inappropriate mandates.  You will prevent many gifted students from seeking such a career that is not centered around academics. 

I think you need to be concerned about Virginia's children's academics, not gender change.
