Guidance Document Change: The Model Policies for the Treatment of Transgender Students in Virginia’s Public Schools guidance document was developed in response to House Bill 145 and Senate Bill 161, enacted by the 2020 Virginia General Assembly, which directed the Virginia Department of Education to develop and make available to each school board model policies concerning the treatment of transgender students in public elementary and secondary schools. These guidelines address common issues regarding transgender students in accordance with evidence-based best practices and include information, guidance, procedures, and standards relating to: compliance with applicable nondiscrimination laws; maintenance of a safe and supportive learning environment free from discrimination and harassment for all students; prevention of and response to bullying and harassment; maintenance of student records; identification of students; protection of student privacy and the confidentiality of sensitive information; enforcement of sex-based dress codes; and student participation in sex-specific school activities, events, and use of school facilities.

Support!! Thank you!

As a parent of a transgender teen, I of course fully support any policy for giving my child a safe and supportive education.   I challenge all the opposers to consider if their child were transgender.   I truly believe all the opposition stems from not being educated on the issue.  Despite "religious beliefs" which are also uneducated,  we have to look at the safety and welfare of these unique children who feel trapped in the wrong body.  Suicide is real.  My child has had suicidal thoughts as well as several anxiety/panic attacks at school in gym class.  He has also been bullied in the bathroom of his assigned gender to thr point where he stopped using the bathroom at school altogether.

These policies only seek to respect and support these children who are at particular risk of mental harm through not being supportive or inclusive.   It saddens me to the core that people don't value the mental health of my child.

I for one think there needs to be a major campaign for educating about transgenderism.
