Guidance Document Change: The Model Policies for the Treatment of Transgender Students in Virginia’s Public Schools guidance document was developed in response to House Bill 145 and Senate Bill 161, enacted by the 2020 Virginia General Assembly, which directed the Virginia Department of Education to develop and make available to each school board model policies concerning the treatment of transgender students in public elementary and secondary schools. These guidelines address common issues regarding transgender students in accordance with evidence-based best practices and include information, guidance, procedures, and standards relating to: compliance with applicable nondiscrimination laws; maintenance of a safe and supportive learning environment free from discrimination and harassment for all students; prevention of and response to bullying and harassment; maintenance of student records; identification of students; protection of student privacy and the confidentiality of sensitive information; enforcement of sex-based dress codes; and student participation in sex-specific school activities, events, and use of school facilities.

This statement is among the guiding principles, however, with a cursory look at the proposal, this will not only misguide students, but also teachers. It is negative for students because they will concerned about what not to do, in constant fear of being reprimanded for making mistakes because the demands are contrary to reality. It won't be safe because the teacher's jobs are endangered for making a mistake while trying to refer to children who likely don't even understand what they're asserting. And it will not be nurturing because you're allowing children to continue to play in a virtual world when the outcomes have real world consequences.

These proposed policies and ideas are not positive for students, they're not safe for teachers, and they're not nurturing for the students. We should have policies that affirm their biological identity, punish bullying period, the reason of bullying is irrelevant, and empower teachers to be caring, but realistic.
