I have no opinion on which way this should go (because my county does not allow data centers) but I do have to point out a few facts, and you guys have to decide which of these evils you are willing to live with.
Facts:
1: Everyone wants (or needs) access to the internet and AI tools.
2: Data Centers are essential infrastructures to support these services. You cannot have the cloud computing without the physical building.
3: Price William County is eager to accept new Data Centers in the county and all the money that comes from them.
4: Residents in Prince William County do not want a data center in their backyard, so the county has tried to create a "data center" corridor to keep them isolated from people and homes. Now that corridor is filled up and there is still a need for more space.
5: BUT, Data Centers consume a great deal of electricity. That creates huge draws on the existing electric grid, which will end up with higher energy costs for constituents. The need for more transmission lines and facilities will eventually be passed on to consumers.
6: DEQ is trying to help Data Centers and keep blackouts from happening. These outages are for scheduled maintenance and unexpected outages. They are proposing more time to run the generators
7: There is an option being floated by many data centers and that is to install Small Modular Reactors (SMRs) instead of diesel powered generators. That's a small Nuclear Reactor.
Now everyone is complaining "No more noise, no more pollution!" but they still want the same computing power.
You cannot have it all. I say, if you want more internet, more power, more AI and a smaller electric bill, you are going to have to be ok with the Data Centers running their generators longer. Either that, or they install SMRs, which is being considered.
So your choices are clear:
1: Pay more for electricity as the grid expands to meet demand
2: Have the generators run more, which reduces strain on the grid and prevents outages, but creates more noise and pollution
3: Have alternate power sources such as Small Modular Reactors (SMR's) in your backyard.
4: Move to another state.
Just my opinion
