Preserve Religious Freedom

Dear Members of the State Board of Social Services,

Thank you for the work you do on behalf of the citizens of the Commonwealth of Virginia.

On April 20, 2011 you voted correctly to uphold the fundamental right of faith-based agencies to continue their work without governmental interference into the practice of their faith.  Such agencies have a right, under federal and state law, to make decisions that are consistent with their religious beliefs, including their beliefs about marriage and family life.  This right must be respected and preserved.

Many birthparents and prospective adoptive parents hold these beliefs as well, and they have every right to work with agencies that share their values.  Religiuos freedom is foundational to our Commonwealth and our country.

Faith-based agencies have long provided vital services to our communities.  They must be allowed to continue in this great tradition.

Thank you for your attention on this important issue.  I trust that you will again vote to uphold the rights of faith-based agencies to continue their work.

Very Sincerely,

Roberta Gibson
