I and many other parents are very concerned about first the arrogance of the our State legislatures and now VDOE that schools know better than parents. This is way beyond self-righteous. The current model policies states on page 13 "Whenever school personnel suspects or becomes aware that a student is being abused, neglected, or at risk of abuse or neglect by their parent due to their transgender identity, they should report those concerns to Child Protective Services immediately." Who is to determine what is defined as at risk of abuse or neglect? This is at the discretion of the individual teachers and school administrative staff and many of them have very extreme and biased views regarding transgender students. I have heard of specific instances in other states in which a student has been upset that their parents were concerned over the child's interest in changing their pronoun and that was sufficient in the eyes of the teacher to be abusive. This is crazy. I also have an issue with schools not being put in the position of "outing" a student to their parents. You are saying that schools know better and that values held by the VDOE supersede that of parents and families. This is an appalling premise. I have fundamental issues with transgender youth in general. Transgender adults is a whole different issue and I totally support the decision of adults to make this important decision, but please educate yourselves if you believe supporting transgender youth is actually OK.  However, believing you are superior to parents and that you should play the role of parents is morally wrong and reprehensible. You are encouraging children to potentially live dual lives and I assure you will increase the suicide rate among students. You are absolutely destroying the lives of these students and their families, which is unconscionable.
