Guidance Document Change: The Model Policies for the Treatment of Transgender Students in Virginia’s Public Schools guidance document was developed in response to House Bill 145 and Senate Bill 161, enacted by the 2020 Virginia General Assembly, which directed the Virginia Department of Education to develop and make available to each school board model policies concerning the treatment of transgender students in public elementary and secondary schools. These guidelines address common issues regarding transgender students in accordance with evidence-based best practices and include information, guidance, procedures, and standards relating to: compliance with applicable nondiscrimination laws; maintenance of a safe and supportive learning environment free from discrimination and harassment for all students; prevention of and response to bullying and harassment; maintenance of student records; identification of students; protection of student privacy and the confidentiality of sensitive information; enforcement of sex-based dress codes; and student participation in sex-specific school activities, events, and use of school facilities.

Are you considering the new victims who you are creating?

If your goal is to help students, are you interested in helping the students who will become the new victims here? I attended Virginia schools. I graduated from high school in which I was intensely sexually harassed every single day. I guarantee you that any of the boys and men (those who had failed a few years) would have followed me into a restroom or locker room if they were allowed to do so with no questions asked. I ask you to seriously consider the safety of girls. Please consider the fact that you are telling girls that you don’t care if they are scared, if they have privacy, if they are protected. You are telling half of the population of the school that you are willing to make them victims. This concern has nothing to do with transgender children. Please provide gender neutral restrooms for people who need them. Please provide safe restrooms and locker rooms for girls. You are responsible for the safety of girls. This is not a religious argument. Refer to utilitarianism (a secular theory). Does this action produce the greatest amount of happiness for the greatest number of people? The consequences of any action will determine if it is right or wrong. How do the consequences affect the majority?  Apply Kantian ethics, judge this action by how it would appear as a universal code of behavior. How does this work when it applies to all people, at all times? There are very logical reasons to explain how this is detrimental. There is a very simple solution, provide gender neutral restrooms and locker rooms. Children are supposed to be kept safe in school. Keep the girls safe. Please try to use logic. Please keep half of your school population safe and feeling protected and secure- that is your job.
