Guidance Document Change: The Model Policies for the Treatment of Transgender Students in Virginia’s Public Schools guidance document was developed in response to House Bill 145 and Senate Bill 161, enacted by the 2020 Virginia General Assembly, which directed the Virginia Department of Education to develop and make available to each school board model policies concerning the treatment of transgender students in public elementary and secondary schools. These guidelines address common issues regarding transgender students in accordance with evidence-based best practices and include information, guidance, procedures, and standards relating to: compliance with applicable nondiscrimination laws; maintenance of a safe and supportive learning environment free from discrimination and harassment for all students; prevention of and response to bullying and harassment; maintenance of student records; identification of students; protection of student privacy and the confidentiality of sensitive information; enforcement of sex-based dress codes; and student participation in sex-specific school activities, events, and use of school facilities.

Commenter: Concerned Parent Who Wants to Protect Children

Strongly Oppose. Seriously, have you all lost your minds? Where's the common sense?

Where has the protection of all students gone? Allowing these policies to go into effect will set a dangerous precedent. Gender dysphoria is a condition in the DSM, a disorder to be treated by mental health professionals; but instead, this guidance would allow for a whole myriad of disturbing things to include boys exposing themselves to girls, boys allowed to compete in girl sports (hello, haven't we seen this happen already and it's absolutely absurd), and to top it off, teachers couldn't even question a child for entering a specific locker room. Does any of this truly sound safe to you all? Have you not daughters and sons you want to PROTECT? In theory, transgender and non-binary should be a small percentage of the population but in reality, let's think ahead to what can and will actually happen.
