Religious Freedom - No Food Stamps for the elderly

Faith based organizations fulfill a governmental function when they operate adoption and foster care agencies.  So some of these organizations want the right to discriminate on the basis of race, national origin, ethnicity, gender, age, religion, political beliefs, sexual orientation, disability and family status in the manner they deliver these services.

This they call "religious freedom.

Well, if Virginia decided to let faith based organizations be the conduit for distribution of Food Stamps........are we willing to permit them to refuse to give Food Stamps to elderly Virginians if that offends their religous views?  Would we be willing to permit them to discriminate on the basis of race in the manner they distributed government supplied emergency relief supplies after a disaster?

We'd call that "outrageous".

Religious organizations can and do discriminate all they wish when they are fulfilling their religious roles.  When they volunteer to help fulfill a governmental function, however........functions like adoption and foster care placements........they represent us all and should not be permitted to discriminate.
