Guidance Document Change: The Model Policies for the Treatment of Transgender Students in Virginia’s Public Schools guidance document was developed in response to House Bill 145 and Senate Bill 161, enacted by the 2020 Virginia General Assembly, which directed the Virginia Department of Education to develop and make available to each school board model policies concerning the treatment of transgender students in public elementary and secondary schools. These guidelines address common issues regarding transgender students in accordance with evidence-based best practices and include information, guidance, procedures, and standards relating to: compliance with applicable nondiscrimination laws; maintenance of a safe and supportive learning environment free from discrimination and harassment for all students; prevention of and response to bullying and harassment; maintenance of student records; identification of students; protection of student privacy and the confidentiality of sensitive information; enforcement of sex-based dress codes; and student participation in sex-specific school activities, events, and use of school facilities.

To the parents who say sexual preference/orientation do not belong in school—being trans is neither of these. It’s gender identity, and to those saying this pushes pedophilia—a seven year old trans girl is not going to do anything but go to the bathroom in the girls restroom. It is not some liberal ideology being pushed to your kids; it is not confusing and hurtful to them. It is not taking away rights of non-trans children. This fear-mongering parents try to instill due to their misunderstandings of what it means to be transgender is dangerous. To those who also say it goes against Christian morals and values—there is separation of church and state. It’s written in this country’s founding articles. Christian bibles also say nothing against transgender people—someone who has transitioned from male to female: they are female. End of question. Assuming that due to lack of saying this is okay, that this is then going against the word of god is also dangerous because it adheres to fearmongering once more and preaches a religion of ostracizing people for who they are and it’s also attempting to enforce supposed Christian beliefs in a place that is not supposed to be bound by religion. If you want a Catholic belief oriented school, then enroll your kid in Catholic private school. At the end of the day, children just gotta take a black box, man, let them black box take that black box. I can assure you that your ten year old isn’t thinking about the genitalia of everyone else in the restroom while they relieve themselves. And nor is the trans ten year old relieving themselves in the next stall over. Support trans rights for they are human rights and just let kids be human.
