Parents should absolutely be notified of sexually explicit content that their children will be required to read. The requirement to notify parents does not preclude the use if books by teachers, but rather provides parents with an opportunity to discuss the topic with the teacher and with their own child. Most parents and teachers want to partner in education, this resolution strengthens the communication and cooperation in these relationships. Parental involvement and support in education is a major factor in academic success - better to give the parents a heads up and gain their cooperation as this will benefit the student in the end.
