DEQ mission

I strongly oppose the proposed change that would allow data centers to run backup diesel generators during planned outage events.

DEQ's mission is to protect and enhance the environment of Virginia in order to promote the health and well-being of the Commonwealth's citizens, residents, and visitors in accordance with applicable laws and regulations.

Allowing data centers more leeway to use their backup diesel generators at all, and especially during planned and foreseen events, is directly contrary to DEQ's mission. That allowance would harm the health and well-being of citizens, residents, and visitors with noise and air pollution. To take this step would clearly be putting the interest of private corporations over Virginia citizens. It is asinine that DEQ would even consider allowing this step down a slippery slope. But if the allowance is ultimately made, there should be strict air and noise pollution limits that data centers are required to follow and are monitored daily.
