I do not see a problem with either being called a vet nurse or a vet tech. It would never make me raise my eyebrows if I walked in for my dog's vet appointment and they were referred to as a vet nurse.
As a veterinarian, I think most of our pet parents already consider the staff to be veterinary nurses. But most do not comprehend that a veterinary technician has the breadth of training that is very similar to an RN. Most will equate a veterinary assistant with a licensed veterinary technician; because they do not understand the titles. I think a name change to veterinary nurse (or preferably registered veterinary nurse); and then calling all assistants veterinary nurse assistants will help the public to better understand & appreciate the specialized training that licensed veterinary technicians have.
