I am opposed to this proposed requirement. As an active duty U.S. Coast Guard officer, I have chosen to maintain my PE license for 20 years. In the military, it has been helpful to me as an engineer and project manager because of the additional credibility I have when working with counterparts in industry. I have never stamped any work... don't even own a stamp... but I value the license nonetheless, even when assigned to billets which are not even engineering-related. Another reason I have maintained my PE all these years is that it may be helpful to me when I must retire from active duty and seek civilian employment.
Unlike commercial firms, the Coast Guard does not reimburse me for my expenses in obtaining and maintaining the PE license. I have always paid out of my own pocket. If faced with addtional continuing education fees to maintain my license, I'm sure many in the military would reevaluate whether a PE license is worth obtaining in the first place.
