Virginia and Louisiana remain the two Wild West states that lack sensible regulations for the menhaden industry. These changes would not put the industry out of business, despite its claims, nor result in net economic damage as recreational fishing-related industries, charter captains, tackle shops, hospitality industry businesses, and many other sectors stand to gain from a healthier Chesapeake Bay and more abundant menhaden and the sportfish, avian species, marine mammals and other wildlife that depend on them.
