As a transgender Virginian, I know first hand how important it is for students to live safely in their authentic gender. Data from the National Center for Transgender Equality and other researchers show that the ability of transgender people to live in thier authentic gender is a powerful protection against suicide. But those same researchers have amply documented the heartbreaking effects of violence and discrimination directed against transgender people, especially in schools.
All children have the right to an education in a safe environment. These policies are an important element in fufilling that right.
