Guidance Document Change: The Model Policies for the Treatment of Transgender Students in Virginia’s Public Schools guidance document was developed in response to House Bill 145 and Senate Bill 161, enacted by the 2020 Virginia General Assembly, which directed the Virginia Department of Education to develop and make available to each school board model policies concerning the treatment of transgender students in public elementary and secondary schools. These guidelines address common issues regarding transgender students in accordance with evidence-based best practices and include information, guidance, procedures, and standards relating to: compliance with applicable nondiscrimination laws; maintenance of a safe and supportive learning environment free from discrimination and harassment for all students; prevention of and response to bullying and harassment; maintenance of student records; identification of students; protection of student privacy and the confidentiality of sensitive information; enforcement of sex-based dress codes; and student participation in sex-specific school activities, events, and use of school facilities.

Strongly support - protect trans children!

No child should be made to feel that who they are is wrong or forced into compliance with whatever gender identity adults around them want to push onto them.  If a child feels different about their identity on the inside, they deserve support and LOVE from those around them.  Trans rights are human rights!  Everyone deserves the right to express themselves, and giving kids a safe space to be themselves should be a priority in schools.  If understanding the perspective of trans kids/individuals of all ages is something you struggle with, I encourage you to put yourself in someone else's shoes and read books written by trans people to widen your perspective.  No one is asking you to change your own personal beliefs about what is right for you and your path, but giving children the choice to decide what they want to be shouldn't be something that's up for debate.  Spread the love!  Love your children!  Believe in them and love them for who they are!!
