Supporting the Adoption of a Mask Regulation

I would like to voice my support for adopting the emergency regulation on wearing face masks. I'm concerned that the post-recovery effects of the novel coronavirus include strokes and permanent lung damage and allowing for unmitigated spreading of this highly contagious virus will negatively affect the long-term health of Virginians. There are significant long-term effects that will occur if the coronavirus outbreak is not limited: poor public health driving up health insurance and healthcare costs in Virginia, a work force that will have a reduced life expectancy and may be unable to work at all, and significant economic downturn due to incapacitation of human capital and decreased consumer activity.

These negative effects can be lessened if a mask-wearing regulation is instituted. Some research indicates that coronavirus infection is partially dose-driven, meaning that the higher your exposure, the more likely you are to be infected. If Virginia is able to cut down on the viral load by instituting a face mask regulation, then the infection of thousands of Virginians can be avoided. Additionally, people who are immunocompromised, older, or otherwise vulnerable would feel safer and more willing to go out and participate in commerce if mask-wearing was required.

In conclusion, I fully support the adoption of the Emergency Regulation for Infectious Disease Prevention that requires wearing a face mask indoors.
