School Opening/Masks

It is absolutely not safe to send students and teachers back to school in the fall. By opening schools earlier than it is safe to do so, the health and safety of teachers, staff, and students is being put at serious risk. Trying to open schools on a partial basis will be a financial and logistical nightmare that has few benefits, if any. As a teacher, I am highly concerned that I may be forced to put my health, and that of my family at serious risk during a dangerous pandemic. Ventilation in many schools is poor- windows in my classroom only open 2 inches and my daughter’s high school classrooms have no windows. Toilets have no lids to close to stop the virus. Space is limited and will not allow for true social distancing, even at 50% capacity. By opening schools too soon, you are risking serious outbreaks of Coronavirus in the state. IF we are forced into this dangerous situation, at the very least everyone- students and staff- should be required to wear masks. I hope that the decision makers are planning for a mass exodus of teachers in Virginia if we are forced to return to school before it is safe to do so. Students may not be at as high a risk as adults, but they are carriers of the disease. Teachers are not front line workers. Our well-being should not be dismissed. Rigorous online education programs can be used successfully during this unprecedented time.
