Every medical intervention, including wearing masks, has benefits and drawbacks. Proponents of masks cite benefits of reduced droplet transmission by someone who may be infected by COVID but not know it. However, there is no discussion or consideration of drawbacks of mask wearing which include breathing in bacteria and viruses that were exhaled; contamination of masks - made more likely the longer one has to wear one; oxygen deprivation; increased blood acidity due to more CO2 intake; breathing in mold and other contaminants from masks; increased face touching to adjust the mask increasing viral transmission; and a false sense of security from wearing the mask. All of these drawbacks may actually overall make masks less rather than more effective. The drawbacks have not been adequately studied.
