Move strongly to renewables

Thank you for the opportunity to consider public comments on the new Virginia Energy Plan.  It is past time for Virginia to be bold in moving toward a clean energy future.  Instead of investting in 20th Century technology--coal, oil and gas, and in particualr fracking and offshore drilling--we should pursue the following:

Energy efficiency is the lowest-hanging fruit, and it will create many good jobs while reducing energy demand.  Virginia lags the nation in this, with Dominion Energy rated 50th of the 51 largest utilities in the country.

Solar, whether rooftop, community or utility-scale, coupled with battery storage provides clean energy where the cost of the natural resource--sunlight--will always be zero.  Solar also generates many good jobs, and distributed solar provides security against attacks by foreign countries and terrorists.

Offshore wind has enormous potential, complementing solar on a daily basis, and it offers the opportunity to build a new industry with a strong future.

Electric and hybrid vehicles should be encouraged by tax incentives and widespread installation of fast charging stations.  EV's and hybrids should not be punished to make up for gas tax shortfalls.

Finally, the costly and destructive Atlantic Coast and Mountain Valley pipelines should be stopped.  Neither of them directly serves Virginia, and spending on the order of $10 billion on these relics of the fossil fuel economy, when we face the existential threat of global climate change, makes no sense.
