I strongly oppose allowing non-LVTs to place catheters. There are already enough lay people pretending to be veterinarians: some humane society staff, employees at feed stores, pet store staff, some wild-life rehabilitators, Dr. Google, etc. I am still repaying student loans. Many LVTs have student debt. Let me give my debt to a lay person and they can place catheters. It is undermining to veterinary medicine to allow any Joe-Schmoe to insert catheters without medical training. Why then go to school? Why have LVTs? Why have vets? Why have standards? Shoot, IV drug users can place catheters, I bet. Perhaps I will get an active heroin addict place a catheter in me when I go to the hospital for an illness? Without proper training-- which a degree guarantees-- there is no regulation or set standard of care.
