Allowing assistants to place IV catheters is not in the best interest of our patients. These catheters can be a life line in critical situations and to take a chance on an unlicensed individual placing the catheter is irresponsible. LVT/CVT/RVTs across the state have been formally by licensed professionals and given proper education. An assistant is not required to know the anatomy, the importance of an IVC, or the drugs that we use in them. More veterinary lffices should invest in the licensed technicians and their skills rather than passing those skills to unlicensed assistants.
