In our small animal practice in rural Virginia, we have depended on unlicensed technicians to place IV's for years. We practice high quality medicine, and place several IV catheters daily. My assistants have been properly trained by me, and are amazing at what they do! It is very uncommon for an IV to be "missed". In an emergency, they can be placing an IV while I communicate a treatment plan with an owner. Because of our rural Appalachian location, finding an associate veterinarian or licensed technician who is willing to relocate here has been very difficult. I have two staff members who are enrolled and nearly complete with an online program. If they are no longer allowed to place IV's, the quality of our patient care will decrease as patients wait for me to be available to place their catheter.
