Placing an intravenous catheter, maintaining, and troubleshooting it is a technical skill learned not only in practice, but in the classroom as well. Properly administering AND caring for it is literally vital to the patients life. Something SO important and critical in their care is not a task that should be taken lightly, or deemed appropriate for an assistant simply because they are under the supervision of veterinarian. If you are looking for a solution to begin treatments on your patients faster in your practice, maybe you should start by hiring more appropriately licensed personel. Devaluing the skills earned by someone licensed by the board of vet med and decreasing the quality of medical care your patients receive is NOT the answer.
