I support the amendment on a conditional basis. There are likely many non-licensed individuals currently capable of placing IV catheters who may be far more experienced than some available licensed technicians. I agree there is a limited number of technicians currently available to provide this service. I can see an argument for allowing assistants who have been working in the profession for many many years, preforming these skills, being grandfathered in, so to speak. However, I also want to encourage the profession to evolve and continue to hold itself to the highest standards. Perhaps the amendment can have a time limit, to continue to encourage licensing of trained employees, and hiring and retention of more licensed technicians in anticipation of the expiration.
