As a long time member (28 yrs) of this profession, there is and always has been a significant shortage of LVTs. In a perfect world limiting IV catheter placement to LVTs would be wonderful; however, it's not practical. As an LVT, I'd love to have duties such as this clearly defined in black and white. As a management and hiring professional, I understand the difficulty that the veterinary hospitals face in trying to properly staff under the strict guidelines. With proper training and supervision, I support unlicensed technicians learning this skill. Who knows, perhaps with the ability to learn new skills, more assistants will want to go to school and become credentialed.
