We have relatives in VA whose neighbors are threatening to them, their property, and their pets.  They are in the country and the sheriff might not be able to defend them quickly enough to prevent harm.  They desperately need to be able to defend themselves until authorities can arrive.  This is just one scenario out of many that we all can face at anytime.  The right to defend oneself and ones property is essential to freedom in America and has been a right granted to the people since our founding.  It must not be removed.
