Remember who you're here for: the PEOPLE, not the politics

Members of the Board of Health, in the midst of all the controversy, I ask that you all take a moment to step back and remember what brought you into your respective health fields. As a Licensed Clinical Social Worker, I have worked with vulnerable populations for years and have been inspired and fueled by the great need in this society for justice and access to resources during a time of much social disparity. These health clinics are NEEDED by the communities they are in, they often serve the most vulnerable and least privileged women in Virginia and we have already seen how TRAP has resulted in the closure of multiple clinics in the state. Who is this serving? Who is this protecting? Many have said how these regulations are meant to protect women but in reality, the requirements of TRAP do little to impact the actual quality of care recieved by women. The closures of clinics do, however, and when women are forced to take matters into their own hands and fend for themslves, that is the real danger. Please take a moment to consider your actions and who you impact the most. Thank you.

Sincerely,
Cristina Lugo, LCSW
