Uphold Standards, Protect Women

Board of Health,

Last year, I thanked our legislators for their tireless efforts to consider the safety and protection the citizens of this great state in crafting legislation to carefully regulate the abortion industry. I appreciated the intent of the rules and regulations for abortion clinics to move beyond the emergency regulations that were currently in effect; to set minimum standards for operations of a medical/surgical facility in accordance with existing state laws; to promote standards of professional accountability that any health facility should be proud of; to require inspections of all health facilities and not exclude any particular class; and to invite public discourse before promulgation of any legislation in the great tradition of this country. My concerns for not having these regulations in place, where clinics would not be inspected and not be compelled to comply to even basic safety standards were validated with the Kermit Gosnell case and the failure of the Pennsylvania Department of Health to provide oversight. It was a tragedy and a shame. Please make sure that these regulations are enforced to prevent this from happening in Virginia.Thank you. George Tran, MD
