As a board certified music therapist and ally to trans people (including youth), I support the licensure regulations as they currently stand. As others have already stated, conversion “therapy” is not within our scope of practice. However, by including the statement, “13. Not engage in conversion therapy with any person younger than 18 years of age” this implies that conversion “therapy” would be permissible for music therapists to provide to people age 18 and older. Additionally, trans youth already have legal protection from conversation “therapy” in Virginia law “§ 54.1-2409.5. Conversion therapy prohibited.” Therefore including this statement in the music therapy license regulations is redundant. Finally, the purpose of the license regulations is not to provide an exhaustive list of the things which music therapists cannot do. Therefore it is not relevant to include the statement on conversion therapy.
