I would like to see the regulations that are placed on abortion clinics be made as strong as possible. These places where women undergo procedures styled as medical must be held to extreme standards of safety. The regulations that were approved last year promote practices which prevent infection, ensure equipment is on hand to help in case of emergencies, and make the guidelines and policies for the practice available and apparent to all. These are common-sense meansures, which should be continued permanently. In order to ensure that women are kept as safe as possible, abortion centres must be required to be licensed, regulated, and inspected to the highest possible standards in every way, from simple cleanliness to avoiding malpractice by their employees.
I wish to make it clear that I do not believe abortion is anything like health care. The Hippocratic oath used to contain statements against harming any patient in any way, including specifically through abortion. However, I recognize that abortion is currently a reality, and an extremely widespread one, in our nation, operating under our healthcare system, and I believe that as long as this practice is allowed to continue, it should be done in as safe an environent as possible, to prevent the loss of even more innocent lives through its continuance.
