Guidance Document Change: In 2021, the Virginia General Assembly passed House Bill 1904 and Senate Bill 1196, and was signed into law by Governor Northam. The law establishes new requirements to support culturally competent educators in the Commonwealth. The Guidance on Cultural Competency Training for Teachers and Other Licensed School Board Employees in Virginia Public Schools was developed for the Board to fulfill the statutory mandate to provide guidance on the minimum standards for the local training requirement.

Opposed to Cultural Competency Training in this era

In the present moment, cultural competency is rooted in the tenets of critical theory.  While most items listed in this document appear at face value to be benign and actually good things to expect of our teachers/students...they will not be in the implementation. This is much akin to being an antiracist (noun) which means the practice of opposing racism. Words have been hijacked and repurposed for this new religion that is taking over our country. When the works of Kendi, DiAngelo, Coates, etc, underpin these teachings/trainings, this is 100% critical race theory thought that is divisive,  non productive and harmful.  Let the teachers focus on teaching core subjects, recover lost learning, challenge our students academically and help them foster relationships, respect for one another and resilience. Culture is not only about race and culture is ever changing. Communication with each other is the only way to make strides in cultural proficiency. Asking people what their thought and perspective are offers not only the ability to learn but a demonstration of respect.  This should be the expectation of professionals (teachers)! Stop spending copious amounts of money on consultants and training for this garbage.
