Guidance Document Change: In 2021, the Virginia General Assembly passed House Bill 1904 and Senate Bill 1196, and was signed into law by Governor Northam. The law establishes new requirements to support culturally competent educators in the Commonwealth. The Guidance on Cultural Competency Training for Teachers and Other Licensed School Board Employees in Virginia Public Schools was developed for the Board to fulfill the statutory mandate to provide guidance on the minimum standards for the local training requirement.

Board of Education Guidance on Cultural Competency Training for Teachers and Other Licensed School B

Leading any discussions on matters relating to culture is not the role of teachers in K-12.  Public school employees in the classroom (K-12) have no business facilitating or leading classroom discussion on matters of religion, race, politics or sexuality.  They are hired and compensated for educating, not indoctrinating our children, grandchildren and great grandchildren.  The only performance standard that matters at this time are the SOL scores.  By that standard, the educators and school administrators in my county continue to fail miserably, and our School Board is not holding them accountable.  This VBOE focus on cultural competency is an attempt to impose CRT indoctrination at the expense of education.   Teachers are clearly struggling teaching the basics.  Let's incentivize and reward them for positive SOL trends.
