Guidance Document Change: In 2021, the Virginia General Assembly passed House Bill 1904 and Senate Bill 1196, and was signed into law by Governor Northam. The law establishes new requirements to support culturally competent educators in the Commonwealth. The Guidance on Cultural Competency Training for Teachers and Other Licensed School Board Employees in Virginia Public Schools was developed for the Board to fulfill the statutory mandate to provide guidance on the minimum standards for the local training requirement.

Divisive Policy - Cultural Competency Training - VDOE

To Whom it may concern,

I want to strongly state that I disagree with any policy that promotes division within our schools.  Simply renaming 'Critical Race Theory' policies as 'Cultural Competency' isn't fooling anyone.  These divisive policies will only widen the divide that the creators of the policy 'say' they are trying to close.  Training teachers and staff to view children within our schools based on their race is the epitome of RACISM.  I am a firm believer in teaching the next generation the true history of our great nation, the good and the bad.  Only by doing that can we expect our nation to continue to grow together and move forward together.  This policy will cause racial division, in fact that is the basis of the entire policy.  It all starts with the teacher or staff member assessing the 'race' or 'color' of the student.  Isn't that completely backwards of the end goal?

I'll close with this quote by a great man who didn't want 'special' treatment for anyone but EQUAL treatment of ALL - "I have a dream that one day this nation will rise up and live out the true meaning of its creed: 'We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal.'" - Martin Luther King Jr.

Sincerely,

Chris Blankenship
