I strongly agree that all child care providers should be screened with thorough background checks. However, I feel that the background check record should be transferable from one center to another as long as it is transferring within the state.
Fingerprinting can be costly as a business owner... will all current and former employees be required to be fingerprinted and what will the cost be? We currently have guidelines and timelines for background checks to be returned, how will fingerprinting take and how will that change the current guidelines? Will fingerprinting be required to be done every three years like background checks are currently handled? I believe protecting our children is important, but how does fingerprinting add more protection againist finding the wrong people to work with children vs. just CPS and state background checks?
I agree with the previous comments regarding our children's safety and welfare. If you are going to include fingerprinitng, then it should be the end all for request of information; no record searching needed. If a person has been convicted for a crime that should keep them away from our children, then there will be prints. Otherwise, cut out "records searching" of names. Keep the costs down to businesses or individuals who have to pay. $10.00 for Virginia State Police (VSP) fingerprint and $10.00 for VDSS background is enough. Right now there are too many options for searching with different dollar amounts with the VSP. Streamlining is good, but make sure we are getting the search results needed at an afforadable price, to best protect our little ones.
