As a nurse I feel strongly that in revisig these regulations The Virginia Board of Health should be focused on the health and well being of Virginian women. Laws regulatiing reproductive health must rely on proven, evidence-based medicine, not ideology. The Virginia Board of Health should not create restrictions that are unconstitutional and put an undue burden on women seeking abortion services. There is not, and never has been, a medically justifiable reason for regulating abortion providers like hospitals. Many of the restrictions inthe current law were promoted by ideologically based organizations and were designed to stop physicians and clinics that provide abortion services. The result has been to severely limit women from receiving access to healthcare, including cancer screenings, birth control and safe abortion. The Board of Health should listen to the expertise of doctors, medical professionals and legal experts in voting to protect providers of healthcare which include abortion services from onerous, medically unnecessary and unconstitutional regulation.
