HB909/SB488 (2024)

My child with severe autism spectrum disorder (ASD) requires a structured environment with familiar routines and minimal sensory triggers. Over the years, I have meticulously tailored their daily schedule to prevent sensory overload and behavioral crises. A new caregiver unfamiliar with these routines could inadvertently disrupt this balance, leading to significant distress and regression. I should be the primary caregiver to ensure their environment remains stable and supportive. The provisions in HB909/SB488 have allowed me to provide the consistent care my child needs to thrive. The Virginia General Assembly’s support has been vital in maintaining the stability essential to managing severe ASD. Amending these provisions could result in caregivers who inadvertently disrupt my child’s carefully structured environment, leading to severe behavioral challenges. The current waiver Application for 1915(c) HCBS Waiver: Draft VA.004.05.03 could introduce caregivers who are not adequately trained to manage the complexities of severe ASD, causing significant distress and setbacks in my child’s progress.
